Constructing a logic of plausible inference: a guide to Cox's theorem

نویسنده

چکیده

Cox s theorem provides a theoretical basis for using probability theory as a general logic of plausible inference. The theorem states that any system for plausible reasoning that satisfies certain qualitative requirements intended to ensure consistency with classical deductive logic and correspondence with commonsense reasoning is isomorphic to probability theory. However, the requirements used to obtain this result have been the subject of much debate. We review Cox s theorem, discussing its requirements, the intuition and reasoning behind these, and the most important objections, and finish with an abbreviated proof of the theorem. 2003 Elsevier Inc. Comments on "Constructing a logic of plausible inference: a guide to Cox's Theorem", by Kevin S. Van Horn

Professor Van Horn has reviewed much of the work that followed Richard Cox’s publication of his axioms for probability in 1946. My comments will emphasize work that came earlier and also merits attention. In particular, I will discuss work by Sergei Bernstein that is closely related to Cox’s but has been neglected by Cox and his commentators. Before reviewing Bernstein’s work, I will discuss th...

The Reasonableness of Possibility From the Perspective of Cox

of the full paper The possibility calculus is shown to be a reasonable belief representation in Cox's sense, even though possibility is formally different from probability. So-called "linear" possibility measures satisfy the equations which appear in Cox's Theorem. General possibility measures encode sets of linear measures, consistent with a method of belief representation based on sets which ...

Developing a Risk Management Model for Banking Software Development Projects Based on Fuzzy Inference System

Risk management is one of the most influential parts of project management that has a major impact on the success or failure of projects. Due to the increasing use of information technology (IT) systems in all fields and the high failure rate of IT projects in software development and production, it is essential to effectively manage these projects is essential. Therefore, this study is aimed t...

EQ-logics with delta connective

In this paper we continue development of formal theory of a special class offuzzy logics, called EQ-logics. Unlike fuzzy logics being extensions of theMTL-logic in which the basic connective is implication, the basic connective inEQ-logics is equivalence. Therefore, a new algebra of truth values calledEQ-algebra was developed. This is a lower semilattice with top element endowed with two binary...

ROBUSTNESS OF THE TRIPLE IMPLICATION INFERENCE METHOD BASED ON THE WEIGHTED LOGIC METRIC

This paper focuses on the robustness problem of full implication triple implication inference method for fuzzy reasoning. First of all, based on strong regular implication, the weighted logic metric for measuring distance between two fuzzy sets is proposed. Besides, under this metric, some robustness results of the triple implication method are obtained, which demonstrates that the triple impli...
